  • No previous musical training is required to undertake the course.

Methods

The lifemusic training is entirely experiential in delivery but is based on secure and well tested theoretical foundations. The workshop is designed to create a place of safety within which participants can learn without anxiety or judgement. The learning is entirely aimed at developing skills without stress. The basic methods of improvisation and communication are introduced through practice but the course will provide detailed written materials which will make sense only after the course has been completed. These materials are also included in the book “Living Music” which may be purchased though this is not essential.

Follow-up training can be arranged as necessary to build on experience and develop new techniques.

About the Trainer

Rod Paton, D.Phil, has over thirty years experience facilitating groups of all kinds at home and abroad. He has worked with disability groups, the elderly, autistic children and adults, children of all ages and young offenders. He has wide experience of music in education and in teacher training. He performs and composes in a number of genres, including jazz and is a trained professional music therapist. He has also conducted team building workshops for busy people in corporate environments. He is a director of Sound Sense, the UK’s leading development agency for community music and is an accredited member of the Higher Education Academy. He has published a book of workshop guidelines (”Living Music”), is the author of numerous articles and book chapters in the field of community and education and he co-wrote the recent Mencap publication “Doing Music”. Dr. Paton is a Senior Lecturer in Music and Performing Arts at University College Chichester.
